Social Technologies as Research and Teaching Tools

This first posting will include my evaluation of two high quality podcast sites.

On Monday the best site I found about podcasts was http://podcasts.yahoo.com. Yahoo has a library of podcasts organized by subject such as arts, technology, science, etc. that one can access at his/her discretion. When one selects a podcast subject area, an image-enhanced list of all available podcasts appears.

Each podcast has two buttons to select – watch or listen and subscribe. I especially like the option of the watch or listen button because one knows immediately if this podcast is functioning properly. One doesn’t have to wonder if the podcast has a video component that is not appearing because some video software program on the computer isn’t working properly.

Of all the podcast lists that I viewed, the subscriptions were free. Also, the number of episodes on each particular topic and a rating of the podcast were given.

At this site, Yahoo also has a short summary of podcasting – a who, what, where, when, and how on podcasting. It takes about five minutes to read and provides a sort of “Podcasting for Dummies” overview. (

Here is a sample selection of a podcast listing available via the Yahoo website.

I also went to some of the sites recommended by Anita Robitaille and found them especially informative.
